Colombo, the capital city

This guest house in Colombo has to be the most unique accomodation we ever stayed in. It actually is a residence of a single old lady who is running her guest house business just to stay engaged with the world (she only accepts foreign nationals). The lady gives everyone a tour introducing all distinguished family members whose portraits decorate the walls, and explaining about antique furnishings in the rooms. A paige boy from her wedding picture grew up to be a prime minister of Sri Lanka! The house itself was an amazing piece of architecture by a Sri Lankan architect.

The second floor where we stayed. We slept in a room that used to be her son's bedroom.

First floor, on the way to the dining area. The indoor garden to the left is an open air garden. The whole house is designed as an indoor - outdoor space. I guess it works in a climate like Sri Lanka's, but for me, coming from the cold north, it is a very unusual concept.

Another open air garden area, and big fish tank at the end of the wall. Talking about good feng shui! To the right you see a cook working in the kitchen.

This must be the sitting area with the view of the garden behind. I can only imagine what a monsoon downpour feels like inside your house while you sit on the coach watching the rain and sipping hot tea.

The wall of plants that we see from our breakfast table.

Yinon is toasting bread, Eial is reading his Kindle.

Another view from the breakfast table. Car is parked right inside, and noone can pass the massive metal gate without close inspection by the lady herself.

Same area, different angle.

The beautiful collection of dinnerware and vases that I get to watch as I eat my breakfast.

Fruits, eggs, and toast, that was our breakfast every day.

Sightseeing in town. We arrived at the park, and the white building right across from it is the Colombo city town hall.

It is so strange to see serene Budhas everywhere, as we are used to much more exhuberant Hindu deities here in India.

A walkway in the park, wide open and clean. In fact, the whole park was so clean that crows literally landed on our heads trying to snatch our icecream cones right from our hands!

At the children's park. Everyone is quite entertained as I am being "very scared" of swinging too high.

Time for lunch. We found ourselves a small beach restaurant - one of two hundred in this area - in Mt. Lavinia, a wealthy neighborhood on the coast, just south of Colombo.

Fresh catch is on display and cooked on request.

Check out the crabs!

Yep, it's pretty fresh.

Maya awaiting her meal.

It was quite a windy day, the tablecloth was about to fly away!
