Kanyakumari, the Southern Most Tip of India

Kanyakumari, situated only 8 degrees North of the equator, is a town at the Southern most tip of mainland India. It has been Eial's dream for years to visit this place. The rest of us happily tagged along for the daytrip. I am  posting some photos from our day at Kanyakumari.

Tightly packed in a back seat of Tata indica, kids are ready to roll.

Only three-hour drive away, and here we are.
A family pic taken by our driver.

Sights from the waterfront road.

Taking a walk along the waterfront.

Eial is pretty excited to have reached his destination.

Views of town and hotels as we stroll along the waterfront.

Fishermen boats neatly docked on shore.

More boats

Our Lady of Snow (?) chapel

Jesus / Joseph boat - great name!

View of the church from the beach promenade.

Fish being dried directly on the beach.

More views of town and church

Facades of buildings facing the sea are covered in tiles, very unusual for India. According to Eial, that's influenced by Portugese azulejo tradition.

Just like trucks, buses, and rickshaws, boats also have a lot of personality. Check out this face!

Dr. Eial couldn't resist snapping a picture of the shrimp decorating a boat.

This boat is a gallery, we are being surprised at every step.

View of two rocky islands, one with Vivekananda temple, the other with the statue of Thiruvalluvar, a Tamil poet and saint.

As we climb to the higher ground away from the beach, we enter small streets of residential area.

Our Lady of Ransom church, white and elegant. It was built 100 year ago in a site of the first original church from 15th century which was just a thatched roof hut.

As we explore around the church plaza, we notice this house. Very clean simple design with beautiful container garden in front, not at all typical for our part of India.

Another house around the church plaza.

Enjoying the space around the church, noone is around!

Maya at the chapel

Boys amusing themselves by chasing each other in circles.

Butterflies always find her.

We chose this restaurant for lunch because of its amazing view of the ocean. Food was excellent too!

Yinon, hungry and serious

Maya eagerly waiting for her fish dish

Raphael, never in his seat

Back at the waterfront, view of the two rocky islands.

Eial is checking his GPS to make sure it is THE southern most point.

Here we are, as south as we can get!

This waterfront is in front of the large Hindu temple (not in picture), and a favorite bathing spot.

Watching the waves crashing at the rocks.

Sights and sounds of the ocean at the Southern most point.
