Touchdown in Chennai

Here are some notes I wrote down when we first landed in India, Chennai airport. We had about 6 hours layover and we were staying in the airport overnight, waiting for our early morning flight to Madurai.

Chennai, September 28, 2011

Here we are, half the way across the world, sleeping on the floor in Chennai airport. I remember when we first jokingly told Maya that we will be spending a night at the airport in India and all of us will be sleeping on the floor. She was so disturbed by that idea, she couldn't fall asleep for couple hours. She kept coming out of her room sobbing and complaining that she does not want to sleep on the floor. I guess three flights and two days of traveling did the trick. She is happily passed out, along with Yinon, and other fellow travelers. But not Raphael, our eternal wiggler. He can't shut his eyes even for a second, he is too busy living his life. There are luggage carts to push, a stack of suitcases to jump off, and an empty hall to run back and forth in. Never mind sleeping people all around.

It's 4am and we've been "parked" here for the last couple hours. Eial is eating his first samosa on Indian ground. I already bit into my first chili by mistake, and killed my first mosquito. The air is warm and muggy as the fans are not working. You can't tell whether you're inside or out, just the way I remember from our last trips to India.

We're quite pleased that eight out of our ten suitcases arrived. We had packed a "survival kit" in our carry-on which consisted of nine bags. We were ready to deal with reality even if none of our luggage arrived, so I guess we're in good shape.

We will be taking a final leg of our flight to Madurai in just couple of hours. I imagine it will be a hectic first day trying to sort out basic sleeping and cooking arrangements. We're excited and we're ready for our new life in Madurai.
